How do you bargain in Latin American countries?

I'm going to costa rica and I've never had the shopping experience in a latin american country. How should I go about bargaining here? Should I cut the price in half from what there asking or is that too rude?

If you are in a mall or chain store you can expect to pay the tag price. On the street, cutting the price in half may be a little drastic, but Latins love to bargain just as much as anybody. Depending on what it is you want to buy try a seventy or eighty percent offer and meet somewhere midway. It helps if you have a rough idea of the value of the item, because sometime times the vendor (especially street vendors) will tack a little extra on the original price just because you are a "gringo" and all us gringos are rich.
