Methane From Waste: An alternate energy resource

Methane can be recovered from a variety of waste sources, namely agricultural waste, landfills and sewage sludge, by anaerobic digestion. This work concludes that the most feasible source for methane recovery is sewage sludge in West Yorkshire as this was deemed to be the Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO).The current UK infrastructure within agriculture presents logistic problems concerning the collection and transportation of waste sources making it impracticable. Landfill gas recovery has a large potential for energy production but current Government legislation eliminates it as an option. The combined risks associated with the project are to secure a reasonable price for the sale of energy and to find a suitable market for the digested sludge by-product.Along with the possible financial gains, environmental benefits make this project a worthwhile venture
